The soul of dance and culture
Statement
Dance in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a rich mosaic of tradition and cultural expression, deeply rooted in the country’s history and identity. While influenced by neighboring styles, it maintains its uniqueness through angular, energetic movements and a focus on pose. The dance forms, including dramatic, folk, and nat dances, each carry distinct characteristics that reflect the country’s rich cultural diversity.
Dance is not just a show but a crucial part of Myanmar’s social and cultural life, deeply intertwined with daily routines and festivities. Originating from Mandalay, where folk dance and performing arts are deeply rooted, and celebrating Myanmar New Year with traditional dances, I feel a strong connection to these art forms. I aim to photograph with creative lighting reflects a deeper appreciation for the spirit of dances, highlighting the beauty and complexity of these art forms, as well as the challenges dancers face, especially when performing in traditional clothing.
